Council Taxes frozen across the UK for 2011

Council Tax is to be frozen in every local authority area in England this financial year, the Chancellor announced in his Budget today. The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) has revealed that the average Band D council tax set by England's local authorities would remain unchanged at £1,439 for 2011/12. 378 local authorities have frozen their average local tax base for 2011/12, while 43 have reduced it.

It follows the Chancellor's decision outlined in his emergency Budget last year, to use £50m of central government funding to help councils freeze tax. DCLG said: "This is the first time every that 100% of local authorities have reduced or frozen council tax since its introduction in 1993/94."

Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles said: "Tackling debt is our priority but we are determined to protect hard working families and pensioners who have been squeezed for too long. This is about giving real and immediate help to families struggling with the daily cost of living."
